Many "handymen" advertise they will do electrical work even though they aren't licensed to do electrical work in Montana. All electrical work over 90 volts is required to be done by a licensed electrician and they are required to carry their license with them at all times.
Montana Law requires anyone doing electrical work to show their license if you are responsible for the job and ask them to show it to you. Some people that could be responsible for the job and ask to see the electricians license are homeowners, building owners, building managers, general contractor, etc. Licensed electricians can ask a person to show them their license as well. This is spelled out in more detail on the "Check For The License" page.
Without fail, every time you call the "handymen" advertising to do electrical work and ask them if they are a licensed journeyman electrician the answer has always been "no". Some of the better "handymen" have actually learned to hire a licensed electrical contractor to do electrical work for them so they don't violate Montana law.
Most "handymen" don't have work comp, unemployment, insurance, etc., and they also operate "under the table". It is you, the homeowner or building owner, taking the risk for these people. If they don't have work comp and get injured on your property they may actually be able to sue you for their own damages and injuries.
All the contractors listed on WIRE MONTANA are required to have work comp, unemployment, health insurance, etc., for their employees. If your contractor isn't listed on WIRE MONTANA, are you willing to take their risk?
If you witness an unlicensed person or handyman doing electrical work you should report them to the Montana State Electrical Board. The life you save could be your own!
